Chinese food is one of my great loves. There’s something about the combination of flavors, textures, aromas, techniques, and expertise that goes into a phenomenal Chinese dish. The sauces, exotic flavors, the vast array of vegetables used in each meal. I love to cook it, eat it, read about it, and learn the techniques to make it.

The cuisine has always attracted me. It’s not just one cuisine, but many regional cuisines from spicy Szechuan cooking to subtle Cantonese, hearty northern China fare, and eastern China’s vegetable-forward dishes. You can travel the entire country and you’d encounter a different culinary experience at every place you stop.

Egg rolls are a uniquely Chinese-American dish quite different from their authentic cousin, spring rolls, a snack served in mainland China. In the US, the rolls became popular, first in New York, then spread across the nation. These rolls with their iconic crispy texture and steaming filling can be found in many restaurants and enjoyed as a quick lunch, appetizer, or accompaniment to Chinese or Chinese-American meals.

Today, we’re going to air fry egg rolls from the comfort of our own home. And, thanks to this perfect kitchen gadget, we won’t even need to use a baking sheet. Let’s get cooking!

Jump Ahead:

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Easy: Egg rolls are a great snack or a great side dish, depending on what you’re planning. They might also be the easiest thing you make all day. Plop them into the preheated air fryer, cook, and boom, they’re ready to eat.

Family Favorite: This is one food the whole family can probably agree on. You might have to offer a few different dipping sauces, but most families agree that egg rolls themselves are delish.

Crowd Pleaser: Crispy egg rolls are a perfect appetizer or quick snack when you’re feeding a crowd for game day, a holiday get-together, or another festive occasion. Put these out and you can be sure they’ll disappear.

Ingredients Needed to Make Frozen Egg Rolls in Air Fryer

Egg rolls and sauce
  • Egg Rolls: This recipe will work with your favorite kind of egg rolls including vegetable egg rolls, pork egg rolls, chicken egg rolls, shrimp egg rolls, and mini egg rolls. It will work with your brand of choice, as well, from PF Changs and Trader Joes to Great Value.
  • Dipping Sauce: Choose your favorite dipping sauce or put out several when serving egg rolls. We recommend providing sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, and sweet chili sauce. Duck sauce and spicy mustard are also excellent when paired with egg rolls.

Equipment Needed In the Kitchen

  • Air Fryer: We have the Ninja Foodi air fryer and absolutely love it. It has a deep fryer basket, is large enough to hold multiple servings, and all the inserts are dishwasher safe. It also roasts, broils, and dehydrates so it’s a great multi-purpose tool.
  • Tongs: You’ll need a good pair of tongs to turn the piping-hot egg rolls halfway through cook time.

How to Make Air Fryer Frozen Egg Rolls

If you thought your only option was to go out for delish egg rolls, think again! You’ll have golden brown crunchy egg rolls in minutes with the help of your air fryer.

Preheat the air fryer

First up, set your air fryer to preheat to 350 degrees F. You’ll also want to program it for 12 minutes of cooking time.

While it preheats, take the egg rolls out of the package and inspect them. If any are broken, they’ll still cook, but you might want to lay down a layer of aluminum foil on the bottom-most pan to keep cleanup simple.

When the air fryer is preheated, place egg rolls in a single layer in the bottom of the air fryer basket. Feel free to fill the basket with as many as will fit in one layer without overlapping. This allows the hot air to circulate completely and evenly cook the egg rolls.

Air fry the egg rolls

After six minutes of cook time, open the unit and run the egg rolls over once. This gives the best results for crisping up the egg roll wrapper as the inside heats up.

Let the rolls continue to cook for the remaining six minutes. If the rolls are meat-based, check to make sure the internal temperature is 165 degrees F. They might need another minute or two. If they’re veggie based, you’re good to go!

You can serve these rolls with other Chinese foods, but if you’re serving a spread of appetizers, the best way to put these on the table is with a nice dipping sauce like sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, or hot mustard sauce.
