Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Quick and Cost-Effective: In just minutes, you can have fresh, homemade apple chips to snack on, take with you on a hike, or pack for a picnic. All for pennies on the dollar when compared to pre-made apple chips you can buy in the grocery store.
Simple: This easy air fryer recipe only takes two simple ingredients to create a great alternative to less nutritious snacking. The hardest part might be deciding which apple is the best way to go. Will you choose pink lady apples? Granny smith? Perhaps a mix with one gala apple and one fuji?
Healthy: Apple chips are a great swap for potato chips if you’re trying to stick to a better eating routine. The thin slices are perfect for munching, and the cinnamon-only version of this air fryer apple chips recipe means you won’t have to deal with added sugar like the store-bought versions.
Kid Favorite: Apple chips are a great snack and a perfect way to get extra fruit into your child’s diet. Add them to lunch boxes or offer them as an after-school snack and you’ll be amazed by how fast they disappear. In fact, this is a nutritious snack the entire family can enjoy!
Ingredients Needed to Make Air Fryer Apple Chips
- Apple: Large fresh apples make great apple chips! We think the best apples include Honeycrisp, Gala, Pink Lady, and Fuji. If you like the tangy type of apples, Granny Smith is a good option, too!
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon powder is perfect for sprinkling on your apples.
Equipment Needed In the Kitchen
- Air Fryer: Any brand will work, but we love our Ninja air fryer. It air fries, bakes, roasts, and dehydrates. And the inserts are dishwasher safe. Win!
- Mandoline Slicer: A flat mandolin is what you want for this since it’s wide enough to slice your apple whole. If you don’t have a mandolin, you can use a knife. If using a knife, you may need a longer air fry time if the slices are thicker.
How to Make Air Fryer Apple Chips
We love apple chips and make them all the time during peak apple season. They’re amazing with cinnamon or cinnamon and sugar, and they never last very long in our house.
Prep the apple
Wash your apple. Then slice it into 1/8 inch slices with a flat mandoline. While you slice, most of the seeds will naturally pop out of the core, so you don’t need to core the apple or do any extra work.
Air fry those apple slices
Set the temperature of your air fryer to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, and set the timer to 15 minutes.
Add the apple slices in one single layer to the air fryer basket and sprinkle with cinnamon (or cinnamon and sugar!). When the air fryer has preheated, add the basket.
Flip the apple slices every five minutes while cooking so both sides will air fry uniformly. If the thin apple slices haven’t turned into crispy chips, increase the cook time by five minutes and check again. They should be mostly dry and crisping on the edges.
When finished, remove the apple chips and let them cool at room temperature on a wire rack. They will finish crisping up while on the cooling rack.
Repeat the cycle with any remaining apple slices until you have a pile of crunchy, crispy air fryer apple chips.
Enjoy when cool and crispy!
Variations on Air Fryer Apple Chips
Apple chips are sweet and cinnamony as-is. If you want to switch up the flavors, try these fun swaps.
Pumpkin Pie Spice Apple Chips: Instead of cinnamon, dust the slices with pumpkin pie spice for fun fall-flavored apple chips.
Cinnamon Sugar Apple Chips: Mix cinnamon and sugar together, then dust the apple chips for slightly sweeter than normal apple chips.
Apple Pie Apple Chips: Sprinkle apple pie spice instead of straight cinnamon for an apple pie flavored apple chip.
Tumeric Apple Chips: Mix cinnamon and turmeric together, then dust the apple chips to make them even healthier.
Air Fryer Apple Chips Tips, Tricks, and FAQs
Absolutely! Place the apple slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees for about 1 hour 30 minutes. Flip apple slices over after 30 to 45 minutes.
All sweet apples will work. Honeycrips, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Gala are some of our favorite apples to make apple chips with. These types will produce sweeter apple chips than other options like granny smith.
These will stay fresh and crispy as long as they’re stored in an airtight container. They’ll easily last up to a month, but we doubt your family will let them last that long 😉
Keep your crispy apple chips in a ziplock bag or airtight container. Even a mason jar will work in a pinch!
