Ingredients Needed to Make Pioneer Woman Deviled Eggs

Eggs, pickles, mustard, mayo, hot sauce, sugar, and vinegar
  • Eggs: Choose your preferred size of chicken eggs for this dish – large are standard, but extra large make a good impression.
  • Mayonnaise: Pick your favorite mayonnaise for this. We think Duke’s mayo is the absolute best, but we won’t judge if you choose something else.
  • Mustard: Choose your favorite mustard for this. Yellow mustard and dijon mustard both work very well.
  • Pickles: While some recipes call for pickle relish, this one uses straight pickles, and we love it! Relish gives your finished product a sweeter taste, whereas using pickles alone makes it a bit more savory.
  • Pickle Juice: Pickle juice is perfect for adding just a little bit of acidity and tang to the recipe.
  • Sugar: White or cane sugar work very well for this recipe. You won’t need much. If you are completely out, you could skip this without any adverse effects.
  • White Vinegar: Vinegar helps balance this recipe beautifully. If you don’t have white vinegar on hand, you can use rice wine vinegar, but stay away from apple cider vinegar unless you want the finished dish to have a sweeter taste.
  • Hot Sauce: Choose your favorite medium hot sauce like Tabasco sauce, Cholula, or Valentina. Avoid extreme hot sauces if you’re feeding this to guests, as the spice will carry through.
  • Salt: Kosher and sea salt both work well.
  • Black Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper is perfect for flavor and presentation. If you only have pre-ground on hand, that will work, too.
  • Smoked Paprika: Traditionally, paprika is added to the top of the eggs for presentation. However, we love using smoked paprika to boost the look and flavor of this classic appetizer.

Equipment Needed In the Kitchen

  • Large Saucepan or Stockpot: A 3-quart saucepan or a stockpot is the perfect size for hard-boiling your eggs.
  • Mixing Bowls: You need one medium-sized mixing bowl to create the yolk mixture that goes into the egg halves and a large bowl for the cold water bath to cool your hard-boiled eggs.
  • Slotted Spoon: A slotted spoon will help you scoop out the freshly boiled eggs and drop them into the ice bath.
  • Serving Plate: Pull out your favorite serving plate to display this classic appetizer that’s loved by all.

How to Make Pioneer Woman Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs are such a classic dish and they’re super easy to make! You can even make them the day ahead to make hosting guests a breeze.

Hard boil eggs

First step, hard boiling those eggs!

Pull out a large stock pot and fill it with enough water that all of your eggs will be fully submerged. Then, set it on high heat and get that large pot of water boiling.

Carefully place your eggs into the boiling water with a slotted spoon. Reduce heat to medium-high and transition from a full rolling boil to a steady simmer. Let the eggs simmer away for 10 minutes.

Once 10 minutes are up, fish the eggs out of the simmering water and lower them into a bowl of cold water. Run cold water into the bowl over the eggs until they are completely cool. You can also use an ice bath or a bowl of ice water to cool them down.

Half-batch note: If you do a half batch, a medium saucepan of water will be large enough. Follow the same steps above of bringing the water to a boil, then letting the eggs cook for 10 minutes in a gentle simmer before cooling. These steps work for a full batch, half batch, or hard boiling only an egg or two.

Boiling note: If you’re short on time, you can also hard boil eggs in the instant pot. Just follow the instructions included with your instant pot device then proceed with the rest of this recipe after they’ve completely cooled.

Make the yolk filling

Peel eggs, then cut each egg in half vertically, exposing the yolks. Squeeze or scoop out the egg yolks into a medium bowl, and set the white half to the side.

Add the remaining ingredients except for the salt and pepper. Mash well with a fork until you have a very creamy filling, then add salt and pepper to taste.

Peeling note: Older eggs will give an easier peel than fresh ones. Eggs that are around 7-10 days old should peel beautifully.

Assemble the deviled eggs

When you’re ready to assemble the eggs, arrange the egg whites on a cutting board. Then, using a small spoon, fill the white halves with a heaping teaspoon of the creamy mixture. Once all the egg halves are filled, add a sprinkling of paprika to the top of the eggs and transfer to a serving tray.

If you want to upgrade this simple presentation, add the filling to a pastry bag or a piping bag with a piping tip. Then, squeeze out the filling into the hollow area in your preferred design. You can also use a resealable plastic bag with the tip cut off, but you’ll have the best results with a piping bag. Then, add a little sprinkle of paprika to finish it off.

Variations on Pioneer Woman Deviled Eggs

The base recipe is great as-is, but it’s a perfect launching pad to create a taste all your own. Here are some ideas to get you started!

Swap Out the Mayo: Many traditional recipes use mayonnaise for the yolk mixture, but you can experiment with other creamy substances. Some people swear by sour cream, others love the richness and health benefits of greek yogurt, still others say their mom made it with cream cheese or miracle whip. Each of these options will alter the flavor slightly, so make a small amount before committing to changing the entire batch.

Use Different Toppings: There are many different ways to go about this one. One easy option is to swap out paprika for your favorite savory spice blend or rub mix. If you want to upgrade the elegance factor, make Russian eggs by topping them with caviar!

Different Mix-Ins: If you want a heartier mixture, consider adding in finely diced or minced red bell pepper or green onions for a unique twist.

Pioneer Woman Deviled Eggs: Tips, Tricks, and FAQs

How should I store leftovers?

Deviled eggs keep beautifully in the refrigerator. Simply place them into an airtight container and consume within a day or two. We’d recommend against covering them in plastic wrap, as the wrap can tend to squash the filling flat.

How can I repurpose leftovers?

If you have more eggs than you know you’ll consume as-is in the next day or two, mash them up and make a yummy egg salad for sandwiches!

Why do you put vinegar in deviled eggs?

Vinegar balances out the flavors and richness, and adds a nice subtle tang to the dish.
